Ack, why does Telegram have better .webp support than Mastodon. 😧

@doxxy Mastodon converts all videos to MP4 too. It sucks.

@doxxy But honestly, why use webp? png exists, is plenty good, and isn't part of Google's "take over the internet" plan.

@IceWolf .webp feels like it was made by hackers and scientists more than Google. Plus I can get lossless webp images that are a fraction of the size of png.

@doxxy Ohuh, didn't know it wasn't really A Google Thing. That's good!

@doxxy Honestly images are small enough we personally lean towards more open standards instead of Google's "standards". We make an exception for video though since video is /huge/ and the common formats are patented.

@IceWolf I'm quite anti-Google as well but some of the subsidiaries that come out of Alphabet seem quite nice. Sidewalk Labs is an example of one I like. (As of a few months back at least. Not sure where I stand with them today.)

@IceWolf Now I want to assign @foxxy a homework assignment to write a report on .webp so I can learn more about it.

@IceWolf This really helps when optimizing textures for VR models. I cut the filesize of my otter down all the way to 5MB. The (4) 2k textures for it are ~900KB in total.

@doxxy not really it turns every webp into a sticker instead of letting it be a standalone image.

@clarjon1 Which is better than filetype not supported xD

@clarjon1 Though if the filesize is large enough it won't render as a sticker. Instead it renders as a file with a preview (which can be enlarged)
