My roommate is thinking of buying a house and asked if we'd like to sublet it. I asked if the HOA allows such a thing and he seemed bewildered that they could prevent someone from doing that.

I then offered to read the HOA's CC&Rs for him when he gets a copy so he can be informed before making a decision.

@doxxy: Oh no. I got a copy of the CC&Rs... it's a scanned copy of a physical document from 2001. 😖

@IceWolf: I don't think HOAs need to be thought of as bad but a lot seem to be poorly managed. In the end an HOA should just be a group of people coming together to try and make things better though organization.

Like, from everything we've heard, they exist solely to be horrible and controlling.

@IceWolf: The horror stories do tend to circulate quite well. I'm certainly not saying bad things don't happen either.

Though HOAs can also do some nice things for a community, such as garbage collection and maintaining public spaces. (Though some HOA's effeciency at doing such things can be quite subpar)
