Stop using Discord!

We can do better.

@foxxy society has progressed past the need for discord

@Ross69

  • Not private
  • Have to make new accounts constantly, always randomly banned
  • Thus, can't use to discuss good topics
  • Software is buggy on many platforms (example: difficult to screen record)
  • Ads
  • For use as a place to store knowledge: it's difficult to search, can't back up
  • Harassment will always be an issue anywhere, but Discord is centralized -> their responsibility, but doesn't do anything about it / overburdened

@foxxy . What is a good platform and how do you look up chat rooms and stuff of interest

@Ross69
Oh goodness I wish I knew, everything seems not too great, but at least some protocols don't have most of those above issues:

  • Matrix - Free, private, decentralized, voice, video, stickers, groups of chat rooms ("spaces").1/2

@Ross69

  • XMPP - Free, private with OMEMO enabled, decentralized, voice, vid. A little less user-friendly / janky.
  • IRC - well, doesn't have a lot of features, no voice or video, but a lot of the communities I visit that also have an IRC are typically focused and interesting at least ("tight knit"). Free, decentralized. History is most searchable / backup-able probably.
